Hydronic Underfloor Heating

Hydronic heating distributes warmth through the slab

Your home has a hydronic underfloor heating system installed by Dylan Eckermann at Eckermann Heating & Cooling.

The system circulates warm water through pipes embedded in the concrete slab, paired with an LG THERMA V R32 Monobloc heat pump controlled by a Zennio Z35 thermostat.

Heat is delivered directly to the floor by warm water through pipes in the slab. Designed to work with your PV solar system — the slab acts as a battery. Solar charges the slab during the day; the slab radiates heat through the night.

  • The system takes around 10 hours to reach temperature when first turned on each winter. The slab also takes a long time to cool down.
  • Start at 21°C and increase by 1°C at a time until comfortable.
  • Set the timer to run the heat pump during daylight hours to use free solar.

🚨 CRITICAL — DO NOT switch off power to the heat pump

When the system is no longer needed, turn it off at the thermostat only. The heat pump must have 240V power to it at all times to prevent a seized pump.

The manifold is the key control point. It lets you turn heating on or off in individual rooms.

  • The top (flow) section distributes hot water. Red indicators show litres per minute.
  • The bottom (return) section has blue taps. Turn clockwise to reduce heat to a room, anti-clockwise to increase.
  • Each circuit is labelled with the room name.

Flow rates were set during commissioning. If a room is consistently too hot or too cold, adjust that circuit’s blue tap — not the thermostat.

Four short YouTube tutorials cover the most common tasks:

Set the time

Switch to heating

Switch to cooling

Set the timer

If installed with the optional Wi-Fi modem (LG PWFMDD200), you can also control the heat pump via the LG ThinQ app on your phone for remote temperature changes and scheduling.

The hydronic system must be serviced annually before winter. Book between March and May.

ServiceCost (inc GST)
Call-out fee$110 (waived if technician in your postcode)
Standard service (testing thermostat, checking pump rotation, cleaning condenser fins)$220
Water treatment refill (Fernox, if needed)$88 per bottle
Additional work$88 per hour + parts
  • Fernox water treatment concentration test
  • pH check (must stay below 8.0)
  • System flow rate check and air bleeding
  • Heat exchanger inspection and cleaning
  • Pump and condenser fin cleaning

🚨 CRITICAL — Adelaide is a hard-water area

Fernox water treatment concentration must be tested annually. A pH above 8.0 voids the manufacturer warranty and dramatically reduces the life of the heat pump.

Troubleshooting — “I’m cold, the heater isn’t working”

Section titled “Troubleshooting — “I’m cold, the heater isn’t working””
  1. Check the thermostat is set higher than the current room temperature.
  2. If the heat pump fans aren’t running:
    • Switch the heat pump isolator OFF.
    • Wait 3 minutes.
    • Switch the isolator back ON.
    • Wait 10 minutes for the fans to start.
  3. If the fans still don’t start after 10 minutes, call Dylan or book online.
